The RX-78-2 Gundam was the Earth Federation's prototype mobile suit, built in secret at Side 7. When Zeon forces attacked the colony, civilian teenager Amuro Ray stumbled into its cockpit and became its pilot. The Gundam's performance in battle — destroying multiple Zeon mobile suits in its first engagement — proved that mobile suit technology could turn the tide of the One Year War. It became a symbol of Federation resistance and the template for all Gundam-type mobile suits that followed.
